Smack in the center of the Badger State there’s a big-hearted little city known for cranberries and the best Independence Day fireworks for miles around. There are 18,000 neighbors in this place everyone calls “The Rapids” and a river runs through it.
Most places, a river divides communities but the one in Wisconsin Rapids brings folks together – just like it did in 1920 when the towns of Centralia on the Wisconsin River’s western shore and Grand Rapids on the east united to become one energetic city with a can-do spirit, the seat of Wood County.
Farmland, wild lands, lakes and streams abound in every direction and there’s always plenty to do inside or out of doors, in the woods or right downtown. Not far from the center of the action is Ocean Spray’s newest process plant where four production lines produce Sweetened Dried Cranberries (SDCs) and Concentrate.
Here on this 70 acre, 300,000 square foot manufacturing, warehousing and fresh fruit processing operation, 153 non-union employees – with an average length of service just over a year – keep this pristine facility producing amazing results to the tune of 40 million pound of SDCs and 3.6 million gallons of concentrate every year. In 2009, “The Rapids” earned Ocean Spray’s Plant of the Year for exceptional performance during a major, $70 million expansion to double the size and triple the staff of the facility without a single lost-time accident. Along the way, The Rapids team beat their capital estimate by 7%, achieved steady production rates in half the time planned and exceeded projected output by 5 million pounds.
