Historically Speaking...

• In 1823, the French Count Philippe Odet brought grapefruit from the West Indies to Florida, planting the first grove near Tampa. ¹
  
  
• In 1885, Florida’s first shipment of grapefruits to New York and Philadelphia created a flurry of interest in the fruit and was the beginning of a serious commercial grapefruit industry.²
  
  
• Grapefruit is believed to be a hybrid of the pomelo with the sweet orange. The grapefruit now has the scientific name Citrus X paradise.³
  
  
• Grapefruit growers from Florida’s Indian River region became part of the Ocean Spray cooperative in 1976 when the company expanded its membership beyond cranberry growers to include grapefruit growers.
