The
key to helping kids learn good nutrition habits is to start early,
start simple and start at home. Parents who maintain a healthy,
positive attitude toward eating tend to pass those attributes on to
their children. |
 |
| Crunch! Teach
kids that potato chips aren’t the only snacks with
that satisfying crunch. Serve celery, carrots, apples,
and other crisp fruits and vegetables with peanut butter
or low-fat salad dressings for dipping. Or serve
fresh fruit kebobs with yogurt. |
| Introduce
new foods at the beginning of meals, in small, manageable
portions, when children are most hungry and willing
to try them. Set out an appetizer tray of fresh vegetables
and cheeses, or serve a small green salad or fruit
salad as the first course. |
| Disguise fruits
and veggies in sweet treats perfect for a quick breakfast
or after school snack. Make mini zucchini breads or
carrot cake muffins, or try our Cranberry
Blueberry Muffins for a double
dose of goodness. |
| Be creative
with veggies. Serve beef and vegetable stir fry, chicken
quesadillas with fresh salsa or a green salad served
in a tortilla shell. |
| For variety,
freeze fruit juices and juice drinks
into pops. Just fill paper cups or molds with juice
and then place sticks in the center when the mixture
is partially frozen. Wildberry
Whoopee Pops are easy and fun to make together. |
| Dried fruit,
such as Ocean Spray® Craisins Sweetened Dried Cranberries,
make a nutritious snack. Toss them on
breakfast cereal, oatmeal and yogurt. Or enjoy by
the handful right out of the bag. A 1/4 cup of Craisins® equals
a serving of fruit, making them a healthy snack choice
to enjoy at home or on the go. |

One of the largest citrus fruits,
the grapefruit’s Latin name is citrus paradisi.
It is certainly a paradise of nutrition and great taste! A
sunny slice of fresh grapefruit or tall glass of grapefruit juice
is just the thing to brighten up these winter-is-almost-over
days. With each sip you'll enjoy the energizing fresh taste of
grapefruit packed with nutrition to help liven up your day. |
 |
| No wonder grapefruit
are so big; they are packed with all sorts of essential vitamins
and minerals: Vitamin C, calcium, potassium, folate, Vitamin
B6, magnesium, thiamin and niacin. (For more on grapefruit
health, visit The Florida Department of Citrus, www.floridajuice.com). |
| Each glass of Ocean
Spray® 100% Grapefruit Juice or Ruby™ Grapefruit Juice
Drink contains 100% Vitamin C, is naturally fat-free, cholesterol-free
and very low in sodium. |
| Eating an average fresh grapefruit can satisfy two of the
5 recommended daily servings of fruits and vegetables. Have
half with breakfast and the other as an afternoon treat. Or
toss grapefruit segments into a salad or fresh fruit salsa to enjoy with broiled chicken. |
| Mix it up with grapefruit
in favorite recipes. One teaspoon of our low-fat White
Grapefruit Vinaigrette has
only 25 calories and zero cholesterol. And our Citrus
Harvest Muffins make mornings seem a little brighter. |
| Grapefruit juice works well in recipes calling for other
citrus juices, like lemons, limes and oranges. Add a wedge
to your favorite cocktail, squeeze some juice on freshly grilled
fish, or add a splash to vinaigrettes or marinades. |
| Grapefruit is not only good for the body, it’s good
for the senses. Close your eyes and breathe in the invigorating
scent of grapefruit. For an added kick, add some zest to baked
goods and marinades. Or add a splash of grapefruit to seltzer
water for a refreshing afternoon pick-me up. |

it—sometimes plain water gets a little boring. This recipe sparkles with
vitamins and irresistible great taste, and even makes a tasty dinnertime mocktail. |
