Kick off your holiday at the Dempzes' Appetizer Table

Charles Dempze was a young boy when he harvested his first cranberry in 1900 for the Gaynor family, owners of Wisconsin-based Gaynor Cranberry Company. Without family to succeed them, the Gaynor family ultimately looked to Charles to continue their cranberry growing tradition. Now, over 100 years from his first harvest, the descendants of Charles Dempze continue his passion for growing cranberries. Led by Charles’ grandson, Gary Dempze, and his family, this 5th generation Ocean Spray Farmer-Owner family loves teaching others about cranberries almost as much as they love growing them, which is why many of their celebrations from family BBQs, to picnics, to football games are hosted right on the farm. The best part of their parties? The delicious cranberry-inspired appetizers, of course! Don’t take our word for it, though; see (or taste) for yourself!

As descendants of the Makepeace family, one of the original Ocean Spray founding families, the Gilmore family knows just about everything there is to know about a classic American Thanksgiving. When they’re done harvesting the over 100 acres of farmland they manage in southeastern Massachusetts, this family of 7th generation cranberry farmers gathers the family for a traditional Thanksgiving celebration. Each year, the Gilmores host the meal, complete with all the fixings from turkey and gravy to apple pie, in their quaint eighteenth century New England farm house. One of their favorite traditions is letting the little ones dress up as Pilgrims and learn all about the origins of this wonderful holiday! If you’re looking to bring a little nostalgia back to your Thanksgiving table, the Gilmores are the experts. So go ahead, make Grandma proud and remind your taste buds what Thanksgiving is all about.

May isn’t typically associated with cranberries or Thanksgiving, but the May family of British Columbia is one of the largest families in the cranberry business! It all began with Duncan May and his five sons who planted their first cranberries in the early sixties. One of those sons, Randy, and his wife Joy started Mayberry Farms in 1984 where they raised their three children, Derek, Melissa and Cory. Today, the family has grown to include spouses and nine grandchildren. As the families grow, they continue to pass on shared family traditions and create new ones, Thanksgiving is no exception. Since Canadian Thanksgiving falls right in the middle of cranberry harvest, Cory and his family’s celebration typically consists of a casual potluck buffet enjoyed in the comfort of their pajamas. Each year the family goes around the table one-by-one to share what they are most thankful for—inevitably it always includes family, friends, and of course, food. So grab your PJs and take home these tasty treats to share with -your loved ones!
