Broccoli and Cranberry Salad

5 cups broccoli florets, cut into 1/2-inch pieces

1/2 cup chopped red onion

1 cup shredded sharp Cheddar cheese

1 cup cooked and crumbled bacon pieces

1 cup sunflower kernels

3/4 cup Ocean Spray® Craisins® Original Dried Cranberries


1 cup salad dressing or mayonnaise

1/4 cup sugar

2 tablespoons red wine vinegar

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/4 teaspoon pepper


Combine all salad ingredients in a large mixing bowl; mix well. Combine dressing ingredients in a small mixing bowl. Mix until thoroughly combined using a fork or wire whisk. Add dressing to salad and mix well. Refrigerate 1 hour.

Makes 8 to 10 servings.

Love this but for a healthier version...

I make this everytime we have a potluck at work or for holiday gatherings, although with so many people trying to eat healthier now, just pointing out that using plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise will trim off a whopping 1300 calories. If you adjust the amount of dressing down a bit a simple version of this without the bacon and cheese also tastes just fine. If I'm just making it to eat at home I usually leave those out unless it's meant to be a main course by itself.

The recipe calls for salad dressing or Mayo... I'm currently not allowed to eat Mayo I'm wondering it is just a plain salad dressing g what type of dressing is used?

I have made this recipe for years. I have made it with red seedless grapes in place of craisins, still very tasty. I make the dressing at 1-1/2 times the recommended amount. My family likes a little more dressing as it can tend to be a little "dry". It's just the right amount for their tastes, not too dry and not to soggy or drowning in dressing. It is a wonderful recipe and my family asks for it every Thanksgiving and Christmas. Wonderful!

Don't know how anyone cannot love this. Unless you hate one of the ingredients. Combined it is fantastic. Reminds me of a,salad I used to get at a high end restaurant and still easy to make. I hold off on the cheese til a bit later. But even on day two leftover, I love it. Whoever says it's salty and not recommended, I highly disagree with.
